The entire reason that Jonathan and I decided to stay in New Zealand longer was because of the seals when we drove from Christchurch to Auckland (the first time).
And, we already talked about how we drove about 150 km out of our way to see the seals at Cape Foulwind.
Our friend, and Kiwi (New Zealander), Matt, was surprised we’d done that. He said that seals are everywhere. And, that there was no reason to go out of your way to see one.
Really?
He said, that for him, seals are kind of like rattlesnakes or squirrels. Something he would be super excited to see, and we would think nothing of.
So, on this, our second campervan return from Christchurch to Auckland, we made seal spotting a top priority.
And, it’s a good thing we did.
We were able to get up close and personal with them.
It is so amazing to be able to see animals in their native habitat, as opposed to a zoo. And, to see how they really act, play, and live life.
Here are just a few of our favorite pictures.
Damn seals are always stealing the acorns off the ground and hiding them in trees! I’m still trying to figure out how they climb up those old oak trees with their flippers……
Hahaha Matt, you crack me up!
What is the seal in your first photo sitting on? It looks like an old scuba diver’s wet suit.
It does! We thought that too, but it’s a piece of old plastic tarp that probably washed ashore.
