Voices to Vices

What is it
That causes us to self-destruct?
To turn our inner voices
into our inner vices?
To listen to the grim
instead of the great?

What is it
That prevents us from reaching
to the highest heaven
to the deepest sea
the sea inside our souls?
What allows us to separate
from ourselves, so that we can
become our own worst foe?

What is it?

(An answer I wish I could know
For if I were to diagnose such a thing
I would truly treat myself
And how I would treat myself
What it would be to be true
to me.)
