Celebrating the 4th of July in New Zealand

4th of July in New Zealand
It was kind of ironic for us to celebrate Independence Day in a country that is still ruled by the Queen of England. And, it was really different celebrating one of summer’s greatest holidays (my birthday being the other of course – just kidding) in the middle of winter.

No outdoor BBQ for us this year. We had to make do with an indoor celebration. But, we still had brats and potato salad and beer.

We spent the afternoon and evening with Matt & Nicole & Caden. And had a great time.

Unfortunately, there were no fireworks and no cookout. But, we still managed to turn what is normally just another day here in New Zealand into a fun celebration.

We celebrated with German food, Belgian beer, and an Ecuadorian card game. How’s that for independent?

But, we forgot to take many pictures…oh well. There’s always next time.

How did you come across cuarenta in New Zealand? I started playing it when I got to Ecuador after my last season working in the mountains in Colorado!

Hi Jon. We actually learned Cuarenta in Ecuador back in February. We brought it with us and taught it to friends here in New Zealand.

Where in Colorado did you work?
