Poem: There Is A Light

There Is A Light

by Jonathan Kraft

written November 1993 when Jonathan is 13

There is a light

it isn’t new

it keeps away the night

and shows people what to do

It gives people a guidance

and gives people room to grow

it protects them like a lance

and can have a striking blow

To step into the light

you will need to perceive

what is just and right

and you need to believe

There are evil things that have no faith

they will try to make you bad

they will never be part of the way

only you they wish they had

On my first try to enter the light

it immediately took a hold of me

but then it looked into my eyes

and told me that I had to see

At first I didn’t understand

what was meant by that

but then I saw that I was bland

without a coat or top hat

So I went out and got myself

all the attire I needed

got it all straight from the shelf

as though I had been seeded

So I went back to see the light

it’s saw all of my new clothes

but it said “No, no… decorate inside

that is where the light goes.”

I was upset, but I was determined

and I thought of what I had done and made

and then I thought, I have sinned.

it’s been a long time since I have prayed

So I went to a priest, told him what I’d done

and he gave me some prayers to say

then I saw it, bright as the sun

and I knew not to be afraid

And I said a small prayer, a thanks to God

for I knew he brought this here

and I prayed with all my heart to him

and even shed a tear

God oh God bring down the light

wrap it all around me

let it hold me lovingly tight

so that I will know how to feel

Let it be my lasting guide

to always show me the way

forever standing by my side

and with me everyday

Thank you for creating the light

it’s my giant friend

let me always keep it in sight

and show me the way to heaven
