Poem: Be Sure To Bring Some Time With You

Written in 1999, based on something a German exchange student said to Jonathan the night before her flight left:

“When you come to visit, be sure to bring some time with you.”

by Jonathan Kraft

I lie awake tonight
thinking of friends of the most incredible kind
who are in far away places.
“What’s new with you?” I might ask them,
if I had the chance.
I have the chance…
That’s the amazing thing;
We have such awesome power
through our “modern” technology.”
-I have such power-
But I can’t use this power,
because why?
Because I don’t have the time?
That’s my excuse, but it’s not valid.
–At least not for me–
I have time I can make
Other time I can use.
So why don’t I use this power?
It’s this heart.
It’s this time…
It’s this situation…
It’s this society, this body,
this job, this requirement, this, this, this, this,…
All excuses, deciding in the end,
that it’s this heart.
It’s desire to inspire, to motivate, to build, to DREAM,
to DREAM–Wow, it’s almost forgotten what that means,
or maybe it’s just forgotten to remember
TO DREAM
It needs to be inspired, to be motivated, to be built up–
to work for the higher goods;
life above convenience,
exceptionality above mere functionality,
desire above lethargy,
Love above hate.
But this heart must have time, and peace
to grow and flourish,
so perhaps it’s some the situation,
but the Heart is getting buried, and the situation
isn’t responsible for that.

The Heart hears the voices
and the pressures of the outside world
and wonders if there is any place left
in this world for solace, and if there is not,
how will it ever function?

Exceptional ideas have always been met with violent opposition from mediocre minds.
-Albert Einstein
