This was a poem written for a client who requested a non-rhyming and sad poem.
Our Stranded Disconnect (The Chasm)
by Jonathan Kraft
Walking the journey
supporting one another
I thought these steps
all life’s steps
would be steps
that we would take together
And now…
This separation
As though a giant chasm
has opened in the space between us…
It is so wide
that you are barely visible
The distance is physical
The pain visceral
The reasons for this separation…
simply tragic.
This makes no sense,
this distance between us
Our stranded disconnect
could be a voice of clarity
a place of reason and comfort
if we were walking side by side
and there for each other
as we used to be.
why must it be
that gray days have come to stay
that the warmth has gone cold
that we must remain separate
Why must it be
Great friends for a lifetime
that’s what I thought
your influence
your love
your care
your support
and your laughter
drifting away
on the rushing wind
blowing through the chasm

The way I wrote this poem, it’s designed with splits of 6, 7, or 8 lines.
These were split to allow the purchaser to combine whichever stanzas they wanted to make the poem under 20 lines, grouped so that they could put 2-3 groups together to make the >20 line poem they think best represented the feeling they wanted to create.
Here was the original request:
Hey, I’d like one sad poem please. The poem should not be about death. >20 lines. Also a title would be great. lets go with loss of someone close. maybe a friend or family member that used to be close but then drifted away due to some sort of event of some sort? No rhyming please.
