All About Sushi
by Jonathan Kraft
(Special thanks to my brother Adam.)
My name is Oo-Shee-Go-She-Sahn,
my friends, they call me Ooshee.
Today, I’d like to talk to you
about this food called sushi!
Some people think sushi is fish.
Raw fish is called sashimi.
Some people like it, others don’t.
For me, the flavor’s dreamy.
Sushi tastes very good with soy,
I mean soy sauce, not the bean.
Soy beans are known as edamame.
I like to eat them steamed and green.
Since we’re talking condiments
Let’s talk about wasabi.
It is a spicy mustard,
a little goes in soy quite nicely.
Wasabi and soy go on the side.
Pickled ginger goes there too.
I love pink ginger, spicy and sweet.
Try a small piece (the first time you do).
Your sushi may come wrapped in kelp,
made thin as paper, it’s called nori.
You may think that’s kind of odd,
but it’s normal in this sushi story.
A kind of dish without nori
is tempura. Give it a try.
It’s foods that are batter-dipped,
then put in a pan and given a fry.
Another thing that can be fried
is made from soybeans too.
It can be firm or silky soft.
This interesting food is called tofu.
Noodles aren’t sushi at all
but my favorite kind is udon.
But now my time is growing short,
and I must get a move on!
It’s time to eat. I’m a sushi chef,
and I’m preparing something nice.
What’s that? You don’t know what is sushi?
That’s silly!
Sushi is the rice!
