Thoughts On Television: From Casa Luna Hotel
Casa Luna Hotel
Being awoken by a neighboring room's overly loud TV surfing various news channels, I'm realizing just how deep the fear of being alone is for most people. Television fills many people's need for connection; in the noise and entertainment it provides, in being able to see the lives of other people to whom the viewer will likely never actually connect in person (but to whom they feel a sense of connection after viewing), and in providing common ground for conversation ("did you see what happened on XYZ program last night?").
It's amazing that television creates this, because it seems that it most often creates the opposite. Having a TV on very often actively and effectively prevents conversation, thereby limiting deeper conversations and connections which might have been made had the TV not been turned on.

The end of an era...
"I guess this is goodbye old pal. You've been a perfect friend..."
We're saying goodbye to a loyal friend today. After meeting in 2006, this friend has been with us over 4 continents, through countless birthdays and holidays, many adventures, and even the occasional witness to future blackmail activities (Zach...), in fact, this friend has been with us for close to 10,000 events in the past 3.5 years.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of our lost friend. Why, because it's...
Our camera. Yes, after being bumped and bruised, scratched, and scraped our camera has finally given in. What was the breaking point? Well, for this camel-no camera- it was not straw, but sand. After a short drop on the beach of the turtle project, the lens cover has given up, and now refuses to open. We were able to coax it open for the last month, but now it refuses all attempts.
But, there's good in all things right? I was going to ask for a new camera for me for Christmas anyway, so we get to celebrate Christmas early. Our gift to ourselves? This new camera we plan on purchasing at some point soon..
Our old Nikon coolpix was so good to us, that we're going to be brand loyal and get this newer version. Can you believe that it costs us the same now for a much better camera as we got then? Funny how things work out that way. Our biggest challenge now is deciding whether to buy it now, and if we do, how to get it to us here in Central America (wherever we are then), or deciding to wait until Christmas to buy it and pick it up.

ABC's of idioms
Carrie and I sometimes play games that other people might find annoying or stupid, but we like them. Especially for long flights, inventing little games is a fun activity.
We decided this time, from Houston to Costa Rica, to invent the game "ABC's of idioms"
(* represents one that we think isn't really an idiom, but couldn't come up with something else during our flight.)

Happy Birthday News
Today is my 30th birthday.
Wow, the big 3 - 0 ![]()
Actually, 30 has never been a big deal to me (as far as getting older or whatever).
But it is kind of a momentous occasion, and I wanted to do something momentous to mark the occasion...
So in addition to the party we had last night (Thanks everyone for attending! It was a great time!), I've started something rolling today which I hope will be fantastic and amazing going forward.

Happy Independence Day 2009: A Poem
For those of you in or from the United States, I hope you enjoy a wonderful day with family and/or friends.
This year, I took a little time to reflect on the holiday and wrote a poem that I wanted to share.
Happy Independence Day!

The Island Reef Job: How Many Videos Did You Submit?
| If you haven't visited our video on the official site yet, we'd really appreciate you if you could do that for us... the link opens in a new window and goes directly to our video: IslandReefWork.com |
"How Many Videos Did You Submit?"
This was a question I was recently asked.
In total, 5 videos.
Two videos were submitted using Carrie's two email addresses, two using my email addresses, and one using our support email address for GreenJoyment.
I know this may have increased their workload a bit at Queensland Tourism's offices (reviewing 5 minutes of video instead of 1 minute), but I read/heard in an interview on the Indie Travel Podcast, that they would accept all applications, even multiples from the same person, as long as they came from different email addresses.
I took that as an open invitation... hopefully that was a good opinion to arrive at.
We'll find out soon enough!
So over the course of the past few weeks, we've made 5 videos, each approaching us, the island reef job, and the reef from a different perspective.
Here are the videos, in the order we submitted them...

Where Is All That Money Going?
A little while back, I wrote a post called "How much is 700 Billion Really?"
When it comes down to it, the United States government will be putting more like 1.5 trillion additional into play in the next few years (which I believe will lead to excessive inflation - but that's a different topic).
An interesting link you may want to check out is http://www.stimuluswatch.org/project/by_state (Sent to us by Renee Fields)
You may find it interesting to see where your state's funding from the stimulus package is going.

We Are All SO Rich. Don't Believe Me?
Maybe it's been prompted by the news I've heard lately that we're in some sort of global economic crisis, but I've been thinking a lot about how much wealth the average person has.
And not just in America or in the Western world, but all around the world, we have so much wealth.
If you don't believe me, try this one on for size.
Assuming you are a sighted person...

Can You Name The Middle East
Renee Fields sent this to me as a forward, and I thought I would post it here on our site, because it's important when you hear the names of places on the news to know where they actually are.
"Drag the country's name onto the map. There is no humbling score nor time limit, but rather this exercise is a learning tool. Don't be afraid to make an error, and once you finish the puzzle, you will be far more educated about this very intense part of our world."

TV Transition: You Have Just 50 Days To Go From Analog To Digital
And now for something completely different.
(Different from the holidays, that is...)
It's just 50 days until America's switchover from analog to digital television.
Carrie and I don't watch TV (just DVD's/movies), and we don't even have our TV connected to the cable or an antenna. But we figure we better get one of these things for our house so that whoever buys our house (and inherits the big screen that came with the house when we bought it), will be able to watch TV when they hook up an antenna to it.
If you're wondering how this conversion thing works, take a look at this approach.
(It ought to make things a little more clear.)
No? Not more clear?
Hmmm...
Special thanks to Brian for sending this video.

Gobble Gobble! The Turkey Song!
For me, Thanksgiving is an awesome and fun time of the year.
For our friends overseas not familiar with Thanksgiving, here's the brief background.
Thanksgiving is the day that Americans celebrate the first pilgrim settlers who made it through a whole year (and a harsh winter) in the "new world" of America.
The story goes that at the end of the harvest, the native Americans and the white settlers (those who had survived) from Europe all got together, sang happy songs, and sat down at a table and broke bread together.
Chances are good that the actual story is much more complex. (But we'll leave that commentary for another time.)
Thanksgiving in the modern sense has become a time to get together with family (and often friends), frequently eating far too much food, watching football (and taking a nap, or a walk, depending on your family), and expressing gratitude for all the wonderful things you have in life.
The traditional Thanksgiving food is turkey with bread stuffing.
All sorts of variations of this food happen of course, but that's what the majority of people expect to be eating on Thanksgiving.
Enter The 2008 Thanksgiving Song!
I've had this song sort of rummaging around in my brain for the past couple of years, so I decided this year, with the help of Carrie (offering encouragement and alternative lyrics), Deanna (offering encouragement and additional lyrics), and my Mom (offering encouragement and creating the accompaniment on the piano), that I would share this fun little song with you!
(Thanks to Adam as well for help with suggestions on the video.)
Happy Thanksgiving (a little early)!
(If you'd like to download it, it will be available shortly... just post a comment below for now and I'll email it to you.)
Hope you enjoy the song (forward it to a friend if you like it), and thank-you for being a wonderful part of our lives.

Baby Giraffe Born On Video
Ever since seeing giraffes in the wild in Africa, Carrie and I have been rather averse to giraffes (or any animal really) in the zoo.
While zoos are great for being exposed to lots of different kinds of animals, there are lots of things about keeping animals in captivity which just don't allow people to see the animals for how and what they really are.
One good thing about the zoo though is that because the animals are watched regularly, some pretty amazing moments can be caught on video.
Kevin Fanter showed this video to Carrie and me of a baby giraffe being born in a zoo. We really enjoyed it, and wanted to share it with you.

How Much Is 700 Billion Really?
I wanted to understand the "bailout package" that congress just approved.
So in order to try to understand this, I did what I always do when I want to know about something, and used Google. I did a Google news search, and Googled the term "breakdown of 700 billion dollars".
Here's the result.

Did you mean "breakdown of 700 Million?" (Not 700 Billion)?

The Solar Cooker Oven Project
Some of you know this already, but Carrie and I are working on a book to teach everyday people (like us) how to green in their daily lives (without growing a beard and becoming a granola-eating, tree-hugging, no-deodorant-wearing, beard-growing hippie), and one of the things we are doing in that community is building a web site called GreenJoyment.com.
The past two weeks, for that site, we've been building and testing out solar cookers, so we wanted to share some of that experience here on our site, to see if anyone here might have an interest in solar cooking (and if not, just to share what we've been up to.

Sunday's Inspirational Story: From Ike to Destiny
Paul Myers is a guy who a lot of people in the Internet Marketing world know, primarily because he offers really great stuff at really cheap prices, and also probably because was one of the first big "marketers" online (or at least he has been online since the days of the first "big" online information marketers - whatever "big" means).
I've gotten a lot from his (completely free, no strings attached, check it out here if you like) goal setting book, and like to read what he has to say about the goings on in the world.
I also frequent the Warrior Forum, which paul mentions in the email below. The Warrior Forum is a place where people who like (or want to like) Internet Marketing hang out and help each other.
Okay, that's all the prefacing you need in order to get the inspiration from this story which Paul sent out today.

$29 for water?
This year (hard as it is for me to believe), I'll be turning 29 on September 27.
(For future reference (and so that no one has to ask how old I am) every year after this year I'll ALSO be turning 29.
)
Some of you don't normally buy me a gift for my birthday, but this year I am doing something special.
I'm asking friends and family of ours to consider participating in charity:water's September birthday project to build wells in Ethiopia and give the people there clean water.
I'm asking for my age in dollars (which would be, in this case, $29), or whatever you can give (even if it's just a couple of dollars/pounds/euros/etc. it makes a big difference).
100% of everything raised goes directly to build wells, and is MATCHED by another organization (founded by actor/director Matt Damon)
This matching means that $20 donated = $40 going towards building wells.
You can complete the process in less than 3 minutes.
Please take a moment and visit my page by clicking the graphic below:

To see why I'm supporting the campaign, watch the 3-minute trailer above (If you haven't already).
Thanks everyone!

New Site Design: Whaddya Think?
Hey everyone!
Well, some of you have visited in the last few days and have seen our new design, but many haven't.
So, I'm just sending out a quick announcement that we've made some site changes and updated our site.
We like the new look, but comment below, and let us know what you think!
(Oh, also, click on the different tabs across the top, because you'll see different pictures of us show up on the site - and in the future, if we have pictures of you, those may show up here as well.)
Also, for those who have been asking, our wedding pictures (as well as a whole bunch of other pictures) are up on the photos page.

The Simple Things
Carrie's mom and Larry were here with us this weekend, and Carrie's mom mentioned that she checks our site daily, but hadn't seen anything in a while...
My friend Renee sent this (below) in an email to me today.
It was a great reminder to just take time to enjoy the simple things in life, so I'm sharing it with you here.

Boomers to Bloggers: Way to Go Misti!
Carrie and I are VERY proud of our friend Misti.
Some of you will remember meeting her at the wedding. (She caught the boquet!)
What you may not know about Misti is that she is one of the most knowledgeable people (possibly in the entire world - no exaggeration) on generational communication.
Misti has written her first book (she thanks us in the credits!) which is launching on Amazon today.
One really neat thing about the launch is how she's doing it.
Instead of just selling you a copy of the book, she has set up a special link, where, if you buy the book from that page, you will be given instructions on how to get a whole bunch of stuff (like $1300 worth of stuff) for free, just for buying the book.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
Some pretty famous people, including Zig Ziglar and Bob Burg, are contributing to this campaign.
(So their bonuses are also included when you buy Misti's book.)
So... here's why you might want the book.

We Be Nerds
And now for something completely different...
A little Friday afternoon fun.
We're totally nerds.
Take a look.
Here is Carrie's Nerd type:
| What Be Your Nerd Type? Your Result: Literature Nerd Does sitting by a nice cozy fire, with a cup of hot tea/chocolate, and a book you can read for hours even when your eyes grow red and dry and you look sort of scary sitting there with your insomniac appearance? Then you fit this category perfectly! You love the power of the written word and it's eloquence; and you may like to read/write poetry or novels. You contribute to the smart people of today's society, however you can probably be overly-critical of works. It's okay. I understand. | |

Oh yah, Jonathan's a total nerd too.
| What Be Your Nerd Type? Your Result: Drama Nerd You sure do love the spotlight and probably have a very out-going and loud personality. Or not. That's just a stereotype, of course. Participation in the theatre is something to be very proud of. Whether you have a great voice for musicals, or astounding skills for dramas/comedies; keep up the good work. We need more entertainment these days that isn't television and video games (not that these things are bad, necessarily.) | |

Mammoth season once again
For those who don't know, we are big fans of professional indoor lacrosse. We have seats that are three rows up behind the Mammoth bench, and really have a great time at the games.
And, here it is again, the start of another season... although for a while the league and players couldn't agree on some things, so they weren't sure that there was going to be a season.
But they got it figured out, and so we're very excited to have been able to atend the first Mammoth game of the season!
There are a few changes to the 2008 Colorado Mammoth. Unfortunately, Gary Gait is no longer head coach. Two very familiar players have also left the team: Stilly (77) and "ManCub" (22). But that doesn't mean that the Mammoth don't still put on an exciting show.
At the end of the first half of the season opener, the Mammoth were down 2-5 against the Calgary RoughNecks.
But they came back to win it 10-9.
It was an incredible game, with some crazy moments. (Brian Langtry may be looking into better personal protection (the guy who hit him was ejected from the game for intentionally whacking him between the legs with his stick), and the RoughNeck's goalie got knocked out when he was hit in the head by a ball.)

Merry Thanksgivoween
We wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Thanksgivoween.

For those of you reading from the United States, have you noticed how the holiday season here in the last three months of the year has sort of blended into one?
Well, this has dawned a new holiday: Thanksgivoween.
We want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Thanksgivoween.
Hi everyone!
We're writing to let you know that we're home now.
We will keep posting our trip with stories, thoughts, and (of course) pictures.
Thanks for tracking (and in some cases participating in) our Honeymoon trek across Europe. More pictures and stories coming shortly!

What colors are you?
My sister had this on her blog. So I took the quizzes, and here are my results:
| You Are Olive Green |
![]() For you, authenticity and honesty are very important... both in others and yourself. You are grounded and secure. It takes a lot to shake you. People see you as dependable, probably the most dependable person they know. |
| You Are Crimson Red |
![]() And while you have an understated passion - you lack the uncontrolled passion of most other reds. You prefer to sit back and enjoy every situation life has to offer. You put an optimistic spin on everything. And even when things are going well, you don't get too amped up. You prefer to keep your emotions as steady as possible. |
| You Are Indigo |
![]() Expressing yourself and taking a leap of faith has always been easy for you. |
Sound like me? What colors are you? Please comment with your results.
Jonathan's Colors
| You Are Grass Green |
![]() You accept the world and people as they are. You don't try to change things. You are also very comfortable with yourself, flaws and all. Optimistic about the future, you feel like life is always getting better. |
| You Are Apple Red |
![]() And although you have a great sense of humor, you are never superficial. Deep and caring, you do like to get to the core of people - to understand them well. However, any probing you do is light hearted and fun, sometimes causing people to misjudge you. |
| You Are Navy Blue |
![]() Sometimes you feel quite scattered and bored. If something exciting isn't going on, you feel a bit lost. |

Carrie Needs...Blogging fun
I steal a lot of ideas from my sister Michelle. I saw this idea on her blog and thought I'd try it. Do a google search where you type in (your name) needs. So, the results for Carrie needs are...
1. Carrie needs a nice hot bath (no kidding)
2. Carrie needs some care herself (doesn't that come with the bath?)
3. Carrie needs help...please (Why yes I do. Anyone want to take a test for me next week?)
4. Carrie needs a boyfriend who she wants (Nope, I have one of those thank you)
5. Carrie needs a Stanford (Depends on what is meant by a Stanford, but I don't think I do)
6. Carrie needs to go back to school (NO WAY!)
7. Carrie needs to eat (Actually, I just ate dinner. Thanks Jonathan!)
8. Carrie needs more than deep-breathing (uhhhh ok ???)
9. Carrie needs to speak to her superordinate (about what?)
10. Carrie needs to do what is best for HER (Yer darn skippy)
Try it out with your name and post it in the comments section. (PLEASE, it's fun!) What do you need?
Bonus:
Carrie needs a mike that works with both fiddle and voice (Now if only I played the fiddle...or sang in front of people)
Thanks Michelle!

You're Loosely Based!
by Storey Clayton
While most people haven't heard of you, you're a really good and
interesting person. Rather clever and witty, you crack a lot of jokes about the world
around you. You do have a serious side, however, where your interest covers the homeless
and the inequalities of society. You're good at bringing people together, but they keep
asking you what your name means.

Memorial Day

April 23, 2007
Dinosaurs apparently came in all shapes and sizes, and letters
We were at Target the other night, and we were walking through the toy section. We say all these multi-colored "pills" on the floor. When we picked them up, we realized that they were those foam things that expand and turn into something when placed in hot water. Someone had opened a package of dinosaur expandable capsules and most of them landed on the floor. We decided to take them home and see how they worked. Here's what the package looked like:

After they all expanded, this is what they look like.

The captions are our best guesses for what they are. I don't really see many dinosaurs in there... Do you?

Important Health Tip

It has been scientifically proven that if we drink 1 liter of water each
day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of
Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria found in feces. Body waste.
In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop. However, we do not run
that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey, beer or other liquor) because
alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling or filtering
and/or fermenting.
WATER = Poop
WINE = HEALTH
Hence: It is better to drink wine and talk stupid than to drink water and
be full of s***.
There is no need to thank me for this valuable information.
I am doing it as a public service.

And they're off...
Today marked a very sad occasion. At 11:58 am our friends, Sara, Ernie, and Samuel backed their car out of the driveway next door for the very last time. They will soon arrive in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The neighborly friendship was a great one. We are just sad that it was so short. It seems as if we had just gotten to know them, even though we've known them for close to four years already. Jonathan and I will no longer be able to watch their wonderful son grow up on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. We will now be suffered to see him only through pictures online - for awhile. Sara was always the person who would run over to our house if we were gone, just to see if we closed the garage door. They were our post office and got and stored our mail while we were gone on our trip this summer. We loved our dinner and game nights at their house. Good times were always had. We wish them all the best in their new jobs, home, and life in Indiana. We are grateful for all the time we got to live next door to them. We look forward to visits (both to see them, and for them to see us).
Thanks for being such amazing people Sara and Ernie! Good luck!

It's snowing!
Just when we thought we were safe from snow for the season. Ok, that's not entirely true. Being from Colorado we know that we can have snow as late as June. Anyway, it's snowing outside...fierce falling snow. It really is pretty, and I'm glad that I'm done with work for the day. I'm also glad that I don't have to go to Boulder tomorrow now. (My professors rescheduled with me because of the snow. They're so awesome.)
Here's a look at what we get to anticipate when it stops snowing:

Happy Easter
Happy Easter everyone!
Jonathan and I were fortuante enough to attend several Easter celebrations this year. On Saturday we went to Boulder and had brunch and an awesome egg hunt at our friends' Shannon and Peter's. Sunday morning, we went to church in Littleton where Pastor Larson is. Then we went for brunch and more egg hunting at Jonathan's parents' house. We went to his Aunt Kerry and Uncle Craig's house for lunch with most of the N family there. It's always fun to get together with everyone. In lieu of the "traditional" outdoor easter egg hunt, we did trivia. How many legs does a bear have?

Why do good people move?
I know that it's been coming for awhile now, but it's always sad when the unfortunate event (no matter how expected) actually takes place. Our friends, who also happen to be our neighbors, are moving to Indiana. They're part of the reason that we moved into the house we did. We liked them, and most of the other neighbors, but them most of all. I know that it will be easier for them, and that they'll have family close by. But that doesn't make it less sad. Ok, I'm just selfish. I know it. But let me mourn for a bit. When my brother moved in November, I tried to convince him and my sister in law to leave their kids. It didn't work on them, and it probably won't work on our friends either.
Good luck Sara and Ernie and Samuel. Indiana is so lucky!

My good friend, Victor Leon, used to say to me "Scarry Carrie, why are you so hairy?" (I was one of the few girls in the school who had hair that was longer than their shoulders.) One day, he put that saying up in big letters on the bulletin board in the hallway.
What is the worst gift someone ever gave you?
Is there such a thing as a bad gift?
What is the best gift someone ever gave you?
Jonathan gave me classes at Massage school so I could learn to give massage.

Jonathan's Christmas Wish List
Well, there are only a few things on my list this year. Carrie and I would really like a new grill. The one we have now burns everything, especially corn (Which is actually a pretty funny story for another time).
(I actually removed this because our neighbor had one and gave it away.)
I said this on last year's list
"Good glove liners... I have nice mitten gloves, which are great, but one of my liners went AWOL and never returned."
and it's true again this year.
I have glove liners... two of them this time, but they're for the same hand.
I would also like a new suit (in black, with a 3 or 4 button jacket). I put a link in here, but I'd really like to try one on and get fitted before I buy one. Money so I can do that or a Mens Wearhouse Gift Card would work well here.
And, since we'll be using the martini glasses for the wedding, any that are on Carrie's list that she's not getting, I'd like as well. We're looking for all different ones (sets of four), that are all clear with no color to them. Here are those links again to ones we like, but don't have yet:
Thank you everyone!

Carrie's Christmas Wish List
It looks like the year got away from me a bit. It's already Christmas time; I can't believe it! Here's my wish-list since some of you have asked.
The main thing I would like this year is money to go towards the new laptop I'll be buying between Christmas and New Year's. (For those of you who may not know, my computer crashed a few months ago, so now I need a replacement.)
Some other ideas include:Martini Glasses (they'll be used for the wedding)
A few movies:
Pride and Prejudice to fuel my love of all things Jane Austen, and the second Pirates of the Carribean movie, because who doesn't like Johnny Depp? (and, more importantly, Kira Knightly). And, Friends the Complete Tenth Season (to complete my collection / obsession)
A few board games to add to the fun: Cranium because it's the best board game around and I love playing it, and The Game of Life because it was a childhood favorite of mine, and the new version is even cooler
I'm also taking a Jane Austen survey class next semester, so I need "working" (AKA used) copies of all her lovely novels.
A Pastry Blender to make baking pies easier:
Thank you!
